Octadecyl Acrylate Is A Colorless And Transparent Liquid

Octadecyl acrylate is a chemical substance with a molecular formula of C21H40O2 and a molecular weight of 324.54, manifested as a colorless transparent liquid. In the classification of chemicals, this substance belongs to irritant substances, which can cause serious harm to the eyes and may cause sensitization when in contact with the skin. It should not be exposed to sunlight or high temperatures for a long time. The partial physical property data of this compound are as follows: density 0.868, melting point 32-34 ℃, flash point 153.1 ° C, boiling point 400.2 ° C at 760 mmHg. Octadecyl acrylate is insoluble in water and soluble in low polarity organic solvents. It has good flexibility, water resistance, weather resistance, low volatility, and low shrinkage.

Based on the physicochemical properties of octadecyl acrylate, this compound can be used as an active diluent and crosslinking agent in radiation curing systems, as well as a resin crosslinking agent and a modifier for polymer substances such as plastics, rubber, and polyurethane [1]. For example, the water-borne polyurethane (WPU) lotion with double bond termination is synthesized from toluene diisocyanate (TDI), hydroxypropyl terminated silicone oil, trimethylolpropane (TMP), N-methyldiethanolamine (N-MDEA), hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), etc. By modifying waterborne polyurethane with octadecyl acrylate, waterborne polyurethane with a long chain hydrophobic alkyl structure can be obtained, and its water repellent properties can be controlled by changing the content of octadecyl acrylate. With the increase of octadecyl acrylate content, the water absorption rate of WPU film is effectively reduced to 4.25%, and the water contact angle of the coated fabric is greatly improved. Moreover, when the octadecyl acrylate content is 40%, the water repellent effect of polyurethane at room temperature can reach the optimal value of 80+points.

Octadecyl acrylate can be used as a pour point depressant for oil products. Adding pour point depressants for chemical modification and transportation of waxy crude oil is an effective method in field applications such as gathering or long-distance transportation. However, there are still many application problems with traditional polymer based pour point depressants, such as unsatisfactory pour point and viscosity reduction effects on certain crude oils, poor timeliness, and poor resistance to shear and repeated heating. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new pour point depressants and conduct in-depth research on the action laws and mechanisms of pour point depressants. Organic modification of natural inorganic nanoclay was carried out using cationic surfactant octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride through ion intercalation exchange. Using toluene as a solvent, polyacrylic acid octadecyl ester (POA)/modified clay nanocomposite pour point depressant was prepared by solution blending method at different concentrations, temperatures, and stirring intensities. The structure of the nanocomposite pour point depressant was characterized using relevant characterization methods, The results showed that the nanocomposite pour point depressant has an intercalated and exfoliated composite material structure, and can be uniformly dispersed in the oil phase system. A typical waxy crude oil, Changqing crude oil, was selected as the experimental oil sample for research. The results showed that compared to pure POA pour point depressants under the same additive conditions, composite pour point depressants can increase the wax precipitation point of crude oil, further reduce the gel point, viscosity, and structural yield value of crude oil. The low-temperature microscopic wax crystal structure of the oil sample is more complete and compact, and the mutual flocculation ability is weaker [2]. In addition, octadecyl acrylate can also be used as a leveling agent for coatings, coatings, and paints
