Pentafluoroethane

Pentafluoroethane (chemical formula: CF3CHF2), also known as R-125, is a refrigerant. At room temperature, it is a colorless gas and becomes a colorless transparent liquid under its own pressure. Its ozone depletion potential (ODP) is 0, but its global warming potential (GWP) is high. Pentafluoroethane can be mixed with difluoromethane to form a near azeotropic refrigerant - R-410A, which is a refrigerant that replaces various chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in air conditioning systems. Pentafluoroethane is still used as a fire extinguishing agent in fire suppression systems.

Pentafluoroethane appears as a nonflammable gas. Heavier than air. May asphyxiate by the displacement of air in confined spaces. Exposure of the container to prolonged heat or fire can cause it to rupture violently and rocket.

The relative density is (water=1) 1.245, the saturated vapor pressure is 1.317 MPa, the ODP value is 0 (ozone depletion potential value - CFCs=1), and the GWP value is 2800 (global warming potential value - CO2=1100 years), making it an ideal alternative to ODS. At room temperature, HFC125 is a stable compound that is compatible with metals such as copper, iron, and aluminum, but incompatible with alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, and incompatible with powders such as Al, Zn, and Be. When exposed to open flames or high temperatures, it decomposes into toxic gases such as HF and carbonyl fluoride, and does not undergo polymerization. HFC125 is a low toxicity substance with very low toxicity.
